Porepunkah is an interesting place (this is a piece of history stuff) not old in European terms as it was a gold rush town formed in the late 1800's in fact lots of the towns in the whole area are there because of the yellow stuff. Lots and lots of people came from all over the world to dig holes in the ground but the amount of racism against the Chinese population was quite amazing. In fact there was murder and mayhem on a grand scale as witnessed by the Buckland riots where several Chinese were beaten to death by white fellas as they thought they were taking all the best claims. So while there is still some mining going on the main occupation in the area is based on tourism. In the summer it's meant to be cooler and drier, in the winter it's all downhill apres ski and all that. In fact it is so popular in the summer we couldn't get a table at a restaraunt in Bright or at the Porepunkah pub on our last day. So we went to the Alpine Pub,a very famous pub in these parts, in Bright.
So local history, eating and drinking formed quite a sizeable chunk of the entertainment. The pictures will explain all.
